Samuel R. Goldstein,
MD
Fellow of the AAOS
Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine & Joint
Replacement
is certified by the
American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in General
Orthopedics, and he also holds a Specialty
Certificate in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. Dr.
Goldstein specializes in General Orthopedic
Surgery, Sports Medicine, and Joint Replacement.
He believes in treating patients in a manner in
which he would like family members to be
treated. Providing conservative treatment when
indicated is his first concern. Surgical
treatment is recommended as an early modality in
cases where required for return to function. His
goal is to return the injured athlete, weekend
warrior, worker, and all other patients to a
pain-free and functional level as soon as
possible.
Dr. Goldstein earned
his MD degree from the University of South
Alabama Medical School. He completed his
internship at Baptist Medical Centers in
Birmingham and his Orthopedic Surgery residency
at The University of South Alabama.
He has been in private
practice in Birmingham, Alabama since 1989 and
founded SMOS in 2000 as a new orthopedic
practice focusing on the return of patients to
an active lifestyle. He has been the medical
director of the Sports Medicine Program at
Trinity hospital since the formal inception of
the program in 1993.

Dr. Flanagan has been
taking care of athletes out on the field of play
in the Birmingham area since 1978, when he

Cherie B. Miner, MD
Primary Care, Sports Medicine
is a Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist. Dr. Miner earned
her Medical Doctor degree from the University of Massachusetts
Medical School in Worcester, MA and completed her residency in
Pediatrics at Pennsylvania State University Hospital in Hershey,
PA. She received her fellowship training in Primary Care Sports
Medicine at The American Sports Medicine Institute in
Birmingham, AL.
A primary care sports medicine physician takes care of medical
and orthopedic problems in athletic individuals of all ages. Her
patients range from highly competitive athletes including
runners, cyclists, tri-athletes, and student athletes, to
weekend warriors, industrial workers, and anyone with general
aches and pains. Primary care sports medicine is a non-surgical
specialty working closely with orthopedic surgeons, physical
therapists, athletic trainers, nutritionists, and coaches. Since
many injuries do not require surgery, her goal is to treat
illnesses and injuries, order appropriate testing, and refer
patients to an orthopedic surgeon when indicated.
