Samuel R. Goldstein, MD

Fellow of the AAOS
Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine & Joint Replacement

is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in General Orthopedics, and he also holds a Specialty Certificate in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. Dr. Goldstein specializes in General Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine, and Joint Replacement. He believes in treating patients in a manner in which he would like family members to be treated. Providing conservative treatment when indicated is his first concern. Surgical treatment is recommended as an early modality in cases where required for return to function. His goal is to return the injured athlete, weekend warrior, worker, and all other patients to a pain-free and functional level as soon as possible.

Dr. Goldstein earned his MD degree from the University of South Alabama Medical School. He completed his internship at Baptist Medical Centers in Birmingham and his Orthopedic Surgery residency at The University of South Alabama.

He has been in private practice in Birmingham, Alabama since 1989 and founded SMOS in 2000 as a new orthopedic practice focusing on the return of patients to an active lifestyle. He has been the medical director of the Sports Medicine Program at Trinity hospital since the formal inception of the program in 1993.

James Adam Flanagan Jr, MD

Fellow of the AAOS
Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine & Joint Replacement

Board certified by American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Fellow of American College of Sports Medicine, Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Medicine, Member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.

Dr. Flanagan received his MD degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He did a surgery residency at the Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals in Houston, Texas, and completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham Medical Center. He also performed a Total Joint Fellowship with Sir Michael Freeman at the London Hospital, London, England.

Dr. Flanagan has been taking care of athletes out on the field of play in the Birmingham area since 1978, when he started with Coach Joe Campbell at Leeds High School and has been involved in high school athletic coverage since that time. He believes that returning the athlete to the field of play is the ultimate goal of sports medicine. He combines conservative care and surgical treatment in a compassionate setting for all his patients since starting practice in 1977.

Cherie B. Miner, MD
Primary Care, Sports Medicine
is a Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist. Dr. Miner earned her Medical Doctor degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, MA and completed her residency in Pediatrics at Pennsylvania State University Hospital in Hershey, PA. She received her fellowship training in Primary Care Sports Medicine at The American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, AL.

A primary care sports medicine physician takes care of medical and orthopedic problems in athletic individuals of all ages. Her patients range from highly competitive athletes including runners, cyclists, tri-athletes, and student athletes, to weekend warriors, industrial workers, and anyone with general aches and pains. Primary care sports medicine is a non-surgical specialty working closely with orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, athletic trainers, nutritionists, and coaches. Since many injuries do not require surgery, her goal is to treat illnesses and injuries, order appropriate testing, and refer patients to an orthopedic surgeon when indicated.

Reneé S. Riley, MD, FAAOS

Fellow of the AAOS
Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine & Joint Replacement

Specializing in Sports Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, and Joint Replacement, Dr. Riley is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of the American Sports Medicine Fellowship Society. She completed her MD degree and orthopedic residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She spent two years as a fellow at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, specializing in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. During her fellowship, she served as the team physician for the University of West Alabama and assisted in providing medical coverage for the University of Alabama.

Dr. Riley's main objective is to help patients return to the activities they enjoy. Non-surgical management is always considered first, and surgery is recommended when necessary. She emphasizes and helps implement strategies for preventing injuries, especially in young athletes. Whether you are a little league athlete, middle-aged person trying to stay in shape, or nursing home resident who is injured in a fall, she realizes that there are activities which are important to you. That makes them important to her, too. She has a sincere desire to get you back to the activities you enjoy as quickly as possible.
